This winter has been very cold in Sacramento. Usually, I can get away with layering, but this year, I needed a coat to protect me from freezing temperatures.
When looking for a winter coat, LA-based personal stylist and expert, Joseph Katz, says to look for a puffer with down insulation. Down is made from duck or goose feathers, which makes a coat a powerhouse of insulation, while remaining breathable and light. Puffer jackets can also feature synthetic insulation, but REI experts say they are not as warm and often bulkier.
With this information, I hopped on UNIQLO’s site since I heard they carry affordable and high quality down jackets. I found this +J Down Volume Oversized Jacket that seemed like the perfect match. This 90% down coat was made in collaboration with legendary fashion designer Jil Sander and features a water repellant coating.

It is no surprise that this jacket is a symbol of the unwavering minimalism Jil Sander represents. The puffer is both simple and chic with its asymmetrical cut.
I have been wearing this coat for the past week and it has successfully kept me warm and cozy on my daily walks. I also love how it acts as a semi-balaclava, since the jacket’s collar covers half of my face. You can rest assured it is a closet staple for me now!
